John Foster - Director (Performance Cricket)
• Give a brief description of your responsibilities within your role at the Shropshire Cricket Board.
General director role to oversee the business of SCB but with particular interest in cricket generally and county squads
• What do you enjoy most about your role with the SCB
Seeing that SCB provide support to clubs who are the life blood of the game and give opportunities for all people to enhance their cricket skills and play against good standard opposition.
• Tell us a little about your educational/professional background before joining the SCB.
Civil engineer by profession worked in the water industry for over 33 years.
• What other jobs do you currently have (if applicable).
None – voluntary work only.
• Other than Cricket what are your other hobbies and interests? I try to play golf when it’s sunny.
• What do you consider to be your greatest achievement within Cricket? Difficult to choose one – so I will provide a few! Playing for the League Cricket Conference against international touring sides (Australia, India, Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka). Captaining Shropshire CCC for a number of years and being in the team which defeated Yorkshire in the Nat West Trophy. Winning the National Club Championship with Shrewsbury at Lords in 1983!
• Who is your favourite cricketer?
Hashim Amla – previously Sir Geoffrey when I was a lad!
• What did you want to be when growing up?
A game warden, once I had got through the train driver phase.
• Who is your biggest inspiration?
Pass
• What is your lifetime ambition?
To keep fit and healthy as long as possible and win the Over 60s Ashes in Australia in 2016
• If you could invite fours guests around to dinner, who would they be?
Donald Trump, Helen Mirren, Maggie Smith,
• If you could make one change to improve the game of Cricket – what would it be?
Remove the fascination with limited life ‘kit’ so that clubs invest more in their base facilities - cut out the time wasting and lack of respect for fellow players and officials. That’s two I know.
• What are your aspirations for Cricket in Shropshire?
Make sure we consolidate and secure what we already have at our Clubs so that players can continue to enjoy the superb facilities which are on offer.
