Shropshire’s leading Disability cricket club is staging an open day on Sunday to help raise the profile of the game in the county.St Georges CC in Telford was recently awarded Disability Cricket Champion Club status by the ECB. The club has run a Disability Section since 1993 and regularly hosts games for Cricket Shropshire’s D40 and S9 representative sides against other counties.
Now it is planning to run a taster session on the afternoon of Sunday, July 4, from 1-4pm as part of the club’s celebration of Disability Cricket which will also feature a demonstration game against the Colwyn Bay MACS Disability side.
Club spokesman Paul Taylor said: “The aim of the afternoon is to highlight the opportunities on offer for people with a disability to get involved in sport.“Alongside the demonstration game, there will be cricket-related taster activities for anyone who comes along with a disability who might want to try them out.
“If someone is really keen, there will the opportunity to join in with the demonstration game, but our focus is to get people who come along to get involved in the activities using the kit bag we have received.”
All the session will be delivered by qualified coaches, and it is open to anyone aged 11 upwards – and no cricketing experience is required.
Paul added: “Separate taster groups will be run for adults and young people – youngsters need to be accompanied by an adult/carer. Cricket kit is not required, just come dressed ready to take part in the activities.
“We are proud to be the only Disability Cricket Champion Club in Shropshire and aim to continue to expand and improve our offer to disabled people.”Cricket Shropshire Lead Officer Steve Reese said: “St Georges CC have been one of the trail-blazers for disability cricket in Shropshire and deserve to be recognised as a Disability Cricket Champion Club.
“The fundamental ethos which underpins cricket is that it is a game for all – regardless of anyone’s background. We aim to provide a safe environment for anyone wanting to get involved – and that includes people with disabilities.“We have a thriving Disability Cricket scene in Shropshire thanks to the hard work of a number of individuals and clubs like St Georges.
“It would be great to see more people with disabilities getting involved and enjoying the huge benefits that involvement in cricket can give them.”
