Includes FAQs
Cricket Shropshire Safeguarding Officer Tracey Pyke has asked that clubs make sure all relevant role holders have their ECB DBS check in place
She said: "ECB DBS checks helps with safer recruitment decisions and prevents unsuitable people from working with vulnerable groups/children, alongside our other safeguarding strategies within our clubs.
"Of particular note is the one year expiry on ECB DBS checks, although they can be set up for auto renewal – see details below.
FAQs
What is the minimum age for an ECB DBS?
The minimum age is 16.
How do I apply for an ECB DBS?
In order to obtain an ECB Vetted DBS Certificate, individuals need to be invited to apply by an approved ‘Verifier’. Most Club Safeguarding Officers are Verifiers and where they are not, they will know who is authorised to arrange that for you. They will send you an electronic link to complete the application online.
If you are unsure how to do this, contact safeguarding@shropshirecricketboard.co.uk for assistance. Umpires and scorers may be able to contact their panel administrator.
Roles in Cricket that require a DBS check (Regulated Role)
The roles in cricket that require ECB vetting are:
What is classed as a regulated role?
If you carry out any of the above roles more than twice in a season then this is regulated and requires a DBS
What if I already have a DBS for my job, or another sport?
You will also need an ECB DBS if you are going to be doing any of the above roles in Cricket as ECB do not accept any third-party checks.
Who can verify my online ECB DBS?
Most Shropshire cricket clubs have an ECB DBS verifier and it will tell you their name at the end of the application process. If you have any difficulties finding someone to verify your ECB DBS, please contact your County Safeguarding Officer for assistance.
What documents will I need to show when my ECB DBS is verified?
You will receive an email with an applicant reference number, the verifier will need this and also the original ID you used when completing the application (example, passport, driving licence and utility bill).
How will I know when the ECB DBS is complete?
Once the ECB DBS has been verified, you will receive an email to inform you. Within the next 7-14 days you will receive the certificate by post.
What if you have lived abroad in the past five years?
You will need to provide a local Police check or certificate of good conduct to cover your period abroad.
Overseas applicants
Applicants from overseas must complete the Non UK resident vetting form and will require a local Police check or certificate of good conduct. A link to download the form can be found on the ECB website HERE..
How long does my check last?
ECB now have an auto renewal free for all volunteers. This means if you sign up for the auto renewal, the ECB will check your application for any updates annually meaning you will not have to complete any forms again. If you do not choose to enrol on this system your check will last for 12 months.
What if I move clubs or role?
No problem, your DBS check can follow you from club to club or even different regulated roles as long as you are signed up for the auto renewal.
I have a conviction, does this mean I can’t coach children or be involved in cricket?
Absolutely not. Having convictions does not necessarily mean you cannot be involved. It does however mean that the ECB Safeguarding Team would need to view your original certificate (by posting it to them) for them to check the details, perhaps discussing this with you and making an informed decision.
Who will see the content of my DBS?
Provided there is no content, or confusion regarding your name, address or DOB then nobody within cricket will see your certificate. If there is a question around content or other detail, then the ECB will contact you and ask for further information or to see the original certificate. Within the ECB, only specialist officers with the Safeguarding Team will be involved.
How much does my DBS cost?
Great news – its free for most! As long as you are a volunteer the initial fee (£40) and annual renewal (£13) is paid for on your behalf by cricket. If however you are paid to carry out your role, such as a paid coach, then you will have to pay for your certificate (and renewals) personally.
