We’ve just completed our second year of All Stars Cricket in Shropshire – and it’s been a huge success.
All Stars is an initiative from the ECB launched in 2017 which is aimed at encouraging youngsters aged 5-8 to get involved in cricket through a fun learning programme.
In Shropshire this year we had 770 registered All Stars at 34 centres across the county – a significant increase on the launch year.
Five clubs were recognised for their efforts in running All Stars Cricket programmes at the annual Cricket Shropshire Awards Night held at the Whitehouse Hotel in Telford.
Bridgnorth
Our largest centre converted their already popular Mini Wickets programme into All Stars and saw 87 children sign up, having to close their registrations early and re-direct to other clubs. Not only did they have a boost to numbers but they utilised their Youth group to assist with delivering the programme, most of whom made up their U19 T20 squad, a fabulous use of their resources.
Alberbury
It was not only about numbers but engaging with local schools and groups, making the transition from classroom to cricket ground. This was hugely evident by this club supporting school visits by the Board Coaches, making that connection not just for one assembly or session but supporting many visits, which resulted in a great first year of 19 All Stars and a boost to other age groups within their Junior Section – congratulations to Richard Jones and Preston Fletcher.

Small rural clubs find it difficult to attract numbers, especially within close proximity of well-established clubs, but with perseverance and knocking on the right doors and making the club a welcoming environment you can succeed. A club which has been struggling to attract juniors due to geographic position and the proximity to larger clubs had success with this programme and it has reinvigorated their Junior Section and membership.
Cae Glas
A similar situation here. They had a school on the periphery of their ground but despite best efforts struggled to get the Junior Section off the ground. With All Stars promotion and support from the Board, Cae Glas had a small group of All Stars and had larger number than their larger town club.
Church Stretton
Following a lengthy meeting one winters evening with the Board, the club decided that if they don’t do anything there is only one way they would be heading. The Board were very active in this market town and the schools have always supported competitions, but the children never seemed to transition to their club. With high Board activity in the schools and a new drive from within the club, they saw a magnificent 37 children attend their All Stars Programme and has really given the club and the town a boost.
